Prosfic Bingo: R is for Rule Britannia, H is for Heat...

I is for Into the Arms of Morpheus, O is for Once a King or Queen in Narnia

I've been sick again, but still able to read, so I have four fics to add to my card.

The first is Rule Britannia by [livejournal.com profile] fajrdrako, which read after [livejournal.com profile] byslantedlight put it on her bingo card. It is an AU set in a dystopian future, and I enjoyed it a lot. It has a lively plot as well as some interesting dynamics between the characters. Among AUs, I generally prefer the fics that include some version of CI5, and this is one of that type. 22,414 words. B/D slash.

The second fic is Heat by Lainie Stone, from the Proslib CD. It was the first Pros story I read this year, on a recommendation from [livejournal.com profile] hagsrus, but I read it again after finishing Rule Britannia because that fic reminded of it a bit. Heat is a sci-fi story set in the same continuity as the show, and it is terrific. Its world is intriguing and vivid, and there is a strong emotional core to its story. I have added it to the Beloved Collection. 11,853 words. B/D slash.

Third is Into the Arms of Morpheus by Jojo, a good little hurt/comfort fic that [livejournal.com profile] fiorenza_a recommended in a comment on one of my other bingo posts. I found it a little hard to follow on my first reading, but it was satisfying on my second. It represents both Lads' characters well. 2,585 words. B/D slash.

The fourth fic is Once a King or Queen in Narnia by Zana. I found this on my own, whilst bashing around on AO3. Into the Arms of Morpheus once had an accompanying podfic, no longer extant. I wondered what other Pros fics had been recorded, and this was one. This fic is excellent. As the title suggests, it is a crossover with The Chronicles of Narnia, but don't let that put you off. Crossovers often don't work due to the difficulty of meshing different fictional universes, and that seems like it would be an inevitable problem here. The trick is done beautifully, though. 6,145 words. Some het with background B/D slash.

If I seem to like everything I read, it's partly because things I don't like I often don't finish, and therefore don't write about. I spent time today reading part of a fic in the zine In the Public Interest 1. I will just say that it was not good and that after eight pages I decided not to subject myself to any more of it.

A Prosfic bingo card with the letters C, E, H, I, M, N, O, R, T, and X filled in.

C: Crossing the Jordan by istia (6,409 words)
E: The Eve of Destruction by istia (3,751 words)
H: Heat by Lainie Stone (11,853 words)
I: Into the Arms of Morpheus by Jojo (2,585 words)
M: Masquerade by Tarot / Chris_Quinton (46,299 words)
N: Night Visit by istia (4,343 words)
O: Once a King or Queen in Narnia by Zana (6,145 words)
R: Rule Britannia by fajdrako (22,414 words)
T: Tea for Two by Alexandra (70,187 words)
X: X Marks the Spot by O Yardley (4,556 words)

Total words: 178,542

I'm sorry to hear you've been ill again, I know how that goes — it's how I discovered fan-fic in the first place.

I love the idea of bashing around on AO3, I've never really thought about it — but that kind of encapsulates my approach too ! And you do find some great stuff.

I found Into the Arms of Morpheus when I was filtering by word count because I wasn't up to concentrating on long stories.

An unbelievable while ago we lost [livejournal.com profile] moonlightmead, her stories are on AO3 — but, by the nature of these things, because she hasn't posted they've slowly settling to the bowels of the feeds. MLM wrote to be read, and like her, her stories are full of wit and humanity — if you haven't discovered them yourself — I do recommend you give them a go: https://archiveofourown.org/users/moonlightmead/profile
