Multifandom Fic Bingo: C is for Can't Return If You're Already There...
K is for the kids who chose themselves, N is for no place like home, F is for the family evans, H is for The Healing Properties of Felt-Tip Pens
Here's another batch of fics for my multifandom bingo card. Three of the five are Harry Potter fics. The wonderful alt.wiz, which I posted about last time, rekindled my interest in Harry Potter fic. I've never been a regular reader, but have had seasons of dabbling, and I seem to be in another one now.
Can't Return If You're Already There by TheDiamondSword400 is a short, reflective A-Team fic with an interesting theme. It came up recently in my RSS feed, and I'm glad I chose it to read. 734 words. Gen.
the kids who chose themselves is a Harry Potter fic. It is part of a series of AUs by
dirgewithoutmusic, this one set in a timeline in which Voldemort killed both Harry and Neville Longbottom as infants. This fic constructs a richly imagined and fascinating alternate history of the First and Second Wizarding Wars and carries a surprising amount of emotional punch. 9,714 words. Gen.
no place like home is another Harry Potter fic from the same series of AUs by dirgewithoutmusic. Here Harry was rejected at Privet Drive and instead raised at Hogwarts. This fic is not quite as compelling as the kids who chose themselves, but it was thoughtful in imagining how Harry might have been different with a different early life, and I liked the way it developed otherwise minor characters from canon. 13,193 words. Gen.
the family evans is yet another AU fic from dirgewithoutmusic's series. This one is really excellent. It tells a story in which Petunia Dursley raised Harry as a second son rather than a hated burden. I love the way it humanizes Petuania and gives her a different arc without entirely changing her character. It also weaves her very nicely into the canon narritive. I've added this one to the Beloved Collection. 3,529 words. Gen.
The Healing Properties of Felt-Tip Pens by Echo is an Avengers fic based in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's well crafted and unusual hurt/comfort that addresses some of the possible consequences of the characters' superhuman abilities. Yet it does so in a way that I find echoes real-world experiences and emotions. I've read it several times over a period of years. 3,464 words. Gen.
