MFU Fic Bingo: Z is for Zugzwang

I want most of my MFU fic bingo squares to be filled by fics I have not read before, but there is only one Man from U.N.C.L.E. story that can represent Z for me: Zugzwang by Azdak, which I reread tonight.

I first encountered Zugzwang in the early days of my interest in MFU, and it has stuck with me like a burr in the years since. Short as it is, it is a great fic. 3,464 words. Gen.

There are actually quite a few MFU stories on AO3 that start with Z. It's okay to read the same story as someone else, though. If that were not the case, we might have trouble finding enough X stories to go 'round. Currently, there are two on AO3 and one on File 40. That's one for you, one for me, and one for sparky955, but none for anyone else who might join the game.

But Zugzwang was so good! Ah well, I’ll try my best to find another good one, rather than duplicate.

PS: Please excuse me if I’m missing something obvious but how do I replace the letters by pictures in the grid?

Not obvious. You will need to download the board image and then modify it with a graphics program of some kind. You don't have to replace the letters with images unless you want to. You can mark them off in any way that appeals.

(After making this comment, I changed the board so that Y is combined with X rather than Z. There are more Z stories than X stories. The change will allow participants to read a wider variety of stories.)

Azdak is the best. Zugzwang is such a difficult idea, she does it so well, and it's devastating. Because you know it's so true to character.

I just thought of another stupid question. A lot of story titles start with A or The. Do all of those fall into the A or T square, or should we skip to the first non-article word?

I plan to skip articles. (I’d call that a thoughtful and pertinent question, myself.)
