O is for On the Cold Hill Side, Q is for Quack, J is for Just Another Step Forward

Mudlarks by tigrrmilk is another Mathey and Lynes story, which I actually read before my last multifandom post but forgot to include. It's a charming short fic in which Julian's work takes him and Ned poking around the shore of the River Thames. It was written as a Yuletide gift for [personal profile] byslantedlight, who is also a poker around in outwardly unpromising places. 1,437 words. Canonical Ned Mathey/Julian Lynes.

After so enjoying Eruv by [profile] imperfectcircle (see my last multifandom post), I decided to check out what else that author had written. One thing I found was It Was That Sort of Day, a fic based on Douglas Adams's Dirk Gently series. In this fic, the murders of three fish suppliers and a series of other unusual occurrences lead Dirk to a discovery. I didn't enjoy this story as much as Eruv. The imitation of Adams's style was skillful and there were some good jokes, but I could not make head or tail of the plot. The overriding reaction I was left with was "huh?". 1,861 words. Gen.

On the Cold Hill Side by [personal profile] marycrawford is a Lord of the Rings fic and Legolas/Gimli slash. I do not particularly ship those two characters, but a few years ago I decided to check out some of the fics written for the ship. Gimli is my favorite LOTR character, and I wanted to see if I was missing something. (That's bookverse Gimli, not movieverse Gimli; the handling of his character is one of the things I most dislike about the adaptations.) I didn't come out of my investigation a converted Gigolas shipper—ha, portmanteau ship names—but I could see the appeal of the pairing and enjoyed some of the fics. This was one I enjoyed, and even added to my collection. I ran across it this past week while poking around my folders, and decided to reread it. I didn't connect with it as much as I had the first time, but I still thought it was good. Much of it concerns Gimli and Legolas visiting the Glittering Caves and Fangorn after the end of the War of the Ring. The overall style of the fic and its attention to landscapes are reminiscent of canon, and all the characters are well handled. There is also a nicely written action scene. 24,937 words. Legolas/Gimli slash.

(Incidentally, my experience investigating Legolas/Gimli fics stands in contrast to the time I decided to check out some fics featuring Harry/Draco. Drarry is by far the most popular ship in Harry Potter fandom, with more entries than the next two ships put together, but it had always puzzled me. Well, I remain puzzled; I find the pairing neither plausible nor appealing. It may be that enemies-to-lovers—or bully-and-target-to-lovers, or whatever you want to call it—is just not my trope.)

I also read Quack by legion, a Sentinel fic in which Jim and Blair have to provide security to a visiting movie star. This was a fun fic, with lots of good exchanges between our two heroes. The slash element felt a little abrupt, but worked okay. 9,160 words. Jim/Blair slash.

While hunting for fics starting with Q in my favored fandoms, I found an AO3 posting called Queerplatonic Headcanon: Sherlock Holmes & John Watson. Well, my response to that was, of course, "Ooh! Sign me up." Later, I decided to search my fandoms for fics with "queerplatonic" in their tags or descriptions. Most were Sherlock Holmes fics, which is probably not surprising, but I also found Just Another Step Forward by bravinto, another Sentinel fic. Unfortunately, I didn't much enjoy it. It was one of those fics that depicts the heroes being more open and articulate about their feelings than seems true to their characters. It also uses anachronistic words to describe sexuality (which is to say, words not coined until a decade after the series ended). I'm also not sure "queerplatonic" is really the right term for the relationship it depicts. Anyway, not a favorite. 1,624 words. Jim/Blair slash.
