Those of you who have been following my multifandom fic bingo posts know that I have been reading and enjoying a lot of Harry Potter AUs lately. Those who have been reading my personal posts know that I recently watched the TV series Apparitions. Inspired by those two things, I read two fics for the letter S: Special Men by
sineala, a crossover with Harry Potter, and Secure Yourself to Heaven by LilyK /
sc_fossil, a crossover with Apparitions.
In Special Men, Ray is an Auror seconded to CI5 from the Ministry of Magic. This story was fun. The blending of the Pros and Harry Potter universes was generally convincing, there were some delightful lines, and the appearances by various canon Harry Potter characters were great. Yet the story was also slightly unsatisfying. I wanted more. The backgrounds Sineala imagined for the Pros characters begged for further development, and some aspects of the interaction between the Wizarding World and the world of CI5 could have used the same. 24,871 words. B/D slash.
Secure Yourself to Heaven is an older Lads story in which Doyle must go undercover as Fr. Jacob, the main character of Apparitions. I really wanted to like this fic. Honestly, I'm not sure why I didn't. It's very well done, with an exciting, unpredictable plot and nicely thought out characterizations of Doyle and Bodie in their sixties. For some reason, I simply couldn't get caught up in the narrative, though. Stressors in my own life right now might be to blame, I suppose. 61,789 words. B/D slash.

A: Arcadia by Sineala (89,908 words)
B: Bare Ruined Choirs by jat_sapphire (3,594 words)
D: Decrescendo by erushi (2,533 words)
F: The Fool's Journey by MJ (11,200 words)
N: Never Let Me Down by Shoshanna (56,802 words)
P: Poetry to Protect Us by The Hag (10,106 words)
S(1): Special Men by Sineala (24,871 words)
S(2): Secure Yourself to Heaven by LilyK / sc_fossil (61,789 words)
Total words: 260,803
