It's 1986. Here in the USA, Bon Jovi is on the radio. The year's top film is Top Gun. New terms coined include: crack baby, glasnost, HIV, Internet, McJob, perestroika, shock jock, sippy cup, sound-bite, and SUV. And, one afternoon in November, Tin Turtle is born.

I read five fics from 1986: three Professionals, one original series Battlestar Galactica, and one Man from U.N.C.L.E. x M*A*S*H crossover.

The first Professionals fic was Double Vision by Pamela Rose. In this fic, Peter Skellen, Lewis Collin's character from the film Who Dares Wins, helps CI5 with an operation. I liked the fic for the most part. The resemblance between Skellen and Bodie was used in interesting ways, both in the CI5 operation and in the personal interactions among the characters. In the end, though, the emotions were too complicated, and I ended up confused and tired. As I've written before, I think this is a shortcoming of mine as a reader rather than necessarily the fault of the author. 47,962 words. Bodie/Doyle slash.

Next I read The Crab Apple Cove Affair by Charlie Kirby ([personal profile] spikesgirl58), an MFU fic. This is a good little story detailing an encounter between Napoleon and Illya and Hawkeye Pierce from M*A*S*H. Brief as it is, the various characters come through well. 2,301 words. Gen.

(In case other MFU fans are interested, I used several sources to search for MFU fics from before 1986 that are available online, but did not find any. I found three from that year, however. The other two were The Death of a Scientist Affair by Miss T Rey and The Long Lost Memory Affair by J. Riddler. I started both of them, but didn't enjoy them enough to finish.)

Stepping out of my main fandoms, I read In the Belly of Leviathan by Pythia, an original series Battlestar Galactica fic. This was a well done adventure story in which Apollo, Starbuck, Colonel Tigh, and the minor character Corporal Komma encounter danger in the hold of one of the ships of the colonial fleet. It was suspenseful, with many twists and turns, and I enjoyed it. 13,062 words. Gen. Particularly recommended.

In Begin Again by Lois Welling (Ann Barrister), a short Pros fic, we find Bodie settling into his first CI5 flat after being hired by the organization. This was a good, atmospheric little character study. 1,318 words. Gen.

The Pros fic Night Before the World Ends by Lezlie Conch (Lezlie Shell) includes both missing scene and coda for the episode Mixed Doubles. This fic has a lot of good character insights and interaction. 4,355 words. Bodie/Doyle slash. Particularly recommended.

The Lifetime Fic Bingo card.

Check out the Pros vids West End Girls by Katharine Scarritt and Final Countdown by DanceDevil, which use hit songs from 1986.
