W is for What Happened to the Thunder and Lightning Brigade, E is for Every Time You Bleed, J is for Jungle Book, J is for Just a Kiss

I have quite a few fics to write up today, but most of them are short. No particular reason for that. They are just the ones that have caught my eye lately.
Under the Jewelled Sky by regshoe is a historical Raffles AU as well as a slight crossover with the poem The Highwayman (which is the source of the fic's title). Here, Raffles and Bunny are highwaymen in the 18th century rather than burglars in the 19th. I didn't enjoy the fic very much. First of all, I already find it somewhat uncomfortable rooting for the criminals in Raffles stories. Making them actually rob people at gunpoint rather than just break into houses amplified the discomfort considerably and possibly fatally. Second, the plot of this fic didn't work for me. Stuff happened, but somehow I felt very little excitement or suspense about it. I'm not certain why that was, but it may be because I had so much difficulty placing myself on the side of the protagonists. 12,782 words. Raffles/Bunny slash.
In a recent post
mab_browne, listed New Age Woo, a Sentinel fic, as one of her favorites among her works. I haven't really been connecting with Sentinel fics lately, perhaps because it's been a long time since I watched any episodes. For that reason rather than any other, I think, this fic didn't excite me. It was fine, though. The characterizations seemed well done and the story was cute. 2,797 words. Jim/Blair slash.
What Happened to the Thunder and Lightning Brigade by Slantedlight (
byslantedlight) is a short crossover between The Professionals and Back to the Future. It has very good dialog between the Lads and its only real flaw is that there's not more of it. 1,231 words. Bodie/Doyle slash.
Comments with spoilers:
Every Time You Bleed by SummerKnight717 is a Marvel fic based mostly on the movies with some influence from the comics. I read it after it was recommended on the r/FanFiction subreddit, which I have been checking out this week. This story employs the classic set-up "baddies try to manipulate Hero A by threatening/hurting Hero B." There's nothing surprising, but the fic is nicely written and effective as an interpretation of that scenario. And that scenario has always been one of my favorite bits of stock melodrama. What will Hero A do? How will Hero B react? What will happen then? 2,230 words. Gen.
Jungle Book by Sebastian is a Professionals story that I found while hunting around for fics starting with J, a surprisingly underpopulated letter. It's a fusion with the Tarzan stories. I'm not certain whether it draws from the movies or the books or both, but I've marked it a movie crossover, since I think the movies are the ultimate source of most people's awareness of the character. AUs of this type are not generally to my taste, but this one is short, so I didn't grow tired of it. It's silly and improbable, but also rather sweet. (I have to say, though, since when does Doyle have "a sunny, equable nature"?) 2,968 words. Bodie/Doyle slash.
Just a Kiss, also by Sebastian, is another J fic and also sweet, though with some prickly bits as befits the Lads (to mix sensory metaphors). I liked it overall. 5,092 words. Bodie/Doyle slash.
(Apologies to my followers who are MFU fans that there have been no MFU fics lately. I've been on a bit of a Professionals spree since attending an online con in that fandom.)
