Lifetime Fic Bingo: 2022
Feb. 27th, 2025 03:45 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
It's 2022. Harry Styles is on the radio. Here in the USA, the year's top film is Top Gun: Maverick. New terms coined include: mpox and quiet quit.
For 2022, I read five fics: two Man from U.N.C.L.E., one Professionals, and two Sherlock Holmes. In a first for this game, I particularly recommend all five of them.
The first Man from U.N.C.L.E. fic I read was The Turnabout Affair by Kate_Wisdom. This is a fun, tropey fic in which Napoleon and Illya are the victims of a body swap. Except for the slash, this story could have been an episode. It has all the classic MFU elements: picturesque locales, mad scientists, beautiful women, banter, gun fights, and our heroes triumphing over Thrush. It was also very well realized. The characterizations of Napoleon and Illya were compelling, and the supporting characters were vivid. I found the story a little slow at the end, but it was well structured overall. I also thought the depiction of what it would be like for the two agents to inhabit each other's bodies was very imaginative and convincing. (The references to other bodyswap stories were fun, too, though I didn't catch any of them on my own.) 31,811 words. Napoleon/Illya slash. Particularly recommended.
I also read the MFU story As You Mean to Go On by

Next I read True by JoJo, a Professionals fic. This story takes place in the wake of the episode No Stone and includes Doyle, Bodie, and June Cook as point-of-view characters. It is not a plotty story, but I found it entirely absorbing. I thought it made very good use of all the characters, both the major and the minor. This was key, as their relationships and inner lives were the heart of the narrative. I was also glad (tiny spoiler) that the Cook's dog was still around. 13,366 words. Bodie/Doyle slash. Particularly recommended.
Time Enough for All Things by teaspoonnebula is a Sherlock Holmes AU in which Watson travels in time to live his life out of sequence. This was another clever fic. The mechanics of Watson's condition are introduced early in the story; later they are put to inventive uses, including interacting unexpectedly with the canon. I also liked this fic's characterization of Mary. She is often given short shrift, especially in slash fics. If this fic has a flaw, it would be that it gets a little sentimental near the end. I didn't really mind, though. 7,872 words. Holmes/Watson slash with Watson/Mary het. Particularly recommended.
In the Sherlock Holmes fic The Stanhope Orphan by idanon, Holmes and Watson investigate the death of a woman who had attempted to consult Holmes. This is an excellent casefic with a real canon feel. It has much more substance to the investigation and makes much better use of Holmes's powers than several commercial pastiches I have read. The Watsonian voice is also good, and the whole package was very enjoyable. This was my favorite fic for the year. 10,227 words. Gen. Particularly recommended.
In the midst of my other reading, I also read a Sherlock Holmes x Harry Potter crossover, The Calculated Luck Mystery by Mr_BiLL. Only after writing it up did I decide that, based on the description, it probably wasn't first posted in 2022. Here's what I said about it:
This fic answers the question, "What if Holmes and Watson were 21st-century wizards?". The result is a fun story detailing the characters' first meeting and one of their early cases. There are no startling deductions here, as there are not in most Holmes fic. Still, the case feels a lot like a Sherlock Holmes adventure, only with elements from the wizarding world cleverly integrated. The Watsonian voice is quite good, too. It sounded a little odd coming from a narrator who was supposed to be born in around 1983. Still, anachronism is a big part of the Harry Potter setting. 13,792 words. Gen.
According to my bingo card, I have only one round left. In practice, I have two, because I'm going to do a bonus round for 2024. Getting close to finished either way, though.
