Happy International Fanworks Day, all!

As in 2021 and 2022, I am celebrating by posting recs from an assortment of fandoms and covering each of three fanwork categories. This year, since crossovers seem to be the theme of AO3's festivities, I have included at least one crossover in each category. Also, this year I'm offering a few more recs, so that there will be more content from the two fandoms I know I have in common with most of my readers. I hope you'll see something you like.

It's been more than a week since my last challenge post, and I haven't been doing a lot of reading. I did finish a very long fic that I've been working on, however, so the point total for this post is still high.

This week, I read two fics that I will not be writing up: one starting with L and worth 27 points, and the other starting with Y and worth 21 points. If you are unbearably curious about why I'm leaving these out, you can send me a private message, and I'll explain. (No, it's not because they are smutty.)

The first piece I will be writing up today is Winter Solstice, Camelot Station by John M. Ford. This is a prose poem that began its life as part of a Christmas card from the author to a friend and was later published in several anthologies. As the name suggests, it is based on Arthurian legend. I'm not going to claim that all modern interpretations of Arthurian legend are fanfic (though if you wanted to claim that, I also wouldn't contradict you). I think this one counts, however, since it appears to draw from another published 20th century interpretation, The Once and Future King.

Based on the feedback on my recent post, I am going to change my approach to these write-ups. In the past, I have strictly avoided spoilers in the posts related to my 2022 and 2023 reading games. This made them suitable for people who had not read the fics I discussed, but also caused me to leave out some of my thoughts on those fics. In the future, I will continue to write spoiler-free blurbs about each fic, but may also include some tag-protected discussion that does carry spoilers.

That's the plan, anyway. Sharing what I've read through these write-ups helps motivate me to read fic, which I find a healthy activity. It also gives me a feeling of accomplishment, which is something that tends to be lacking in my life. (Showing off that I've read things is particularly appealing, I think, for reasons related to the private post I made in October.) That said, I'm not always eager to actually do the write-ups, feeling that I'd rather spend the time reading fic. Thus, making them even longer may not turn out to be something I want to do. We'll see.

Hello out there! I get intermittent likes and comments on my fanfic write-ups, so I assume someone is reading them even when there is no feedback. Today I've been thinking about how I might make my write-ups better, and I wonder if anyone who has been following my posts has any suggestions. Do you like the write-ups? How would you change them? What would you like to know about the fics I read?

It's been my practice during my 2022 and 2023 reading games to avoid spoilers very strictly when writing up fics. That seems in line with fandom etiquette, but it hampers discussion quite a bit. For instance, I didn't get to talk about my feelings about suicide as a romantic gesture in connection with one fic I read recently, because there was no way to do so without spoilers. (They would have been major ones in that case, but I have mostly been avoiding even fairly minor ones.) What spoiler level do you think is best for my fic write-ups? Should I change or carry on as I have been?

M is for Monkey Suits With Satin and Lace, S is for The Steppes of Central Asia Affair, G is for The Gemini Factor

Million-Word Fanfic Challenge board so far.
The key for the challenge board.

Those of you following these posts may notice that I did decide to mark crossovers that draw from fandoms in two different categories. The squares representing those fics are colored mostly with the color of what I consider the main fandom of the fic, but a corner of each square is colored to represent the other fandom.

Most of my reading time during the period I'm covering today has been devoted to crossovers, in fact, starting with The Gyptian Caravan Affair and The Steppes of Central Asia Affair, the first two fics in Taylor Dancinghands's ([profile] tdancinghands) trilogy UNCLE Through the Aurora. This is Man from U.N.C.L.E. daemon fic, meaning it uses the idea of daemons from Philip Pullman's book series His Dark Materials. This fic is also set in the chief alternate world from that series (which not all daemon fics are). I'm a fan of daemon fic, and I enjoyed that element of these stories. Indeed, I think they did a very good job of weaving the presence of daemons into the plots. The plots themselves were well paced and interesting and had a definite resemblance to Napoleon and Illya's adventures in canon, reimagined for a fantasy setting. The characterizations of our heroes were also good (though the supporting OCs were perhaps a bit stereotypical). In short, these were very well made fics. That said, there was something missing for me. I really can't identify what it was. The fics just felt a little inert. Nevertheless, I do intend to read the final installment of this series at some point. 20,596 words and 13,894 words. Both NS/IK slash.

(Curiously, there are 10 or so daemon fics in Man from U.N.C.L.E. fandom, but apparently none in Professionals fandom. I hope to write some for Pros someday. I have a number of ideas.)

I also read Quaint, a Doctor Who fic by [personal profile] kathkin. This is a short, partly humorous, partly serious account of a conversation between Zoe and Jamie, the Second Doctor companions. It was insightful and I enjoyed it. 2,035 words. Gen.

Monkey Suits With Satin and Lace by Joana Dey is a Professionals fic. I have to say that I didn't like this much at all. The characterizations didn't work for me (weepy Doyle!), and I have issues with the ending. 2,134 words. B/D slash.

On the other hand, I had a grand time reading The Gemini Factor by Russ. This is a crossover between The Professionals and the film Who Dares Wins starring Lewis Collins. It is somewhat unusual in being told in the first person, which was definitely the right choice for the story it tells. That story is engrossing and unravels at just the right rate. There are both compelling emotions and some wonderfully cinematic action late in the story. 25,868 words. B/D slash. Particularly recommended.

Today I read two short fics with 'rabbit' in the title in honor of the start of the Year of the Rabbit according to the Chinese zodiac.

The first, Run, Rabbit, Run by PR Zed ([personal profile] przed) was a fic I'd read and enjoyed before. It's a little crossover between The Professionals and the movie Blade Runner. (I'm wondering now if I should somehow indicate crossovers in the color coding of the squares on my challenge board. Let me know what you think.) I love the writing in this fic and the story it tells, while circumscribed, is good, as well. 1,000 words. B/D slash. Particularly recommended.

My second rabbit fic was a Raffles story by [personal profile] jj_minerva called Brave Little Rabbit. It tells the story of a incident from Bunny and Raffles' school days, and was an interesting and believable bit of backstory. 2,004 words. Raffles/Bunny slash with Raffles/OMC slash.

I also read one of the two Man from U.N.C.L.E. fics recced at [profile] mfu_shortstorie today: Blind Man's Bluff ? by [personal profile] fiorenza_a. That was a mistake. The fic was perfectly good, but I often have problems with fics on this theme. Having failed to heed the thoughtfully provided warning, I ended up triggered in the more formal sense. 2,677 words. NS/IK slash.

# is for 4 Vignettes With No Kissing & 1 Ex-Yacht, A is for After the World Went Awry, S is for The Singing of Many Wires

The key for the challenge board.

I'm having a terrible week thanks to a toothache that allowed me only one hour of sleep last night. I don't have a lot of patience for writing up fics, but I want to get some of these out of the way before I forget the details. The results may fall a bit below standard.

Lefty Sings the Blues by MirrorMasque ([personal profile] masterofmidgets) is a fic based on the song Pancho and Lefty by Townes Van Zandt. It's really good with skillful writing, strong characterizations, and a lot of genuine emotion. It's sad, as is inevitable given the source material, but worth it. 3,818 words. Pancho/Lefty slash. Particularly recommended.

1991 by SkyborneVeggies, an MFU fic, is also good. I don't particularly like stories that feature long separations of the OTP, as this one does. It works, though, and the fic has excellent atmosphere. 1,616 words. NS/IK slash.

4 Vignettes With No Kissing & 1 Ex-Yacht by captain_starcat is also an MFU fic. It traces the developing relationship between our heroes from their alternating points of view. I liked it a lot. 2,048 words. NS/IK slash. Particularly recommended.

After the World Went Awry and its sequel The Singing of Many Wires by teaspoonnebula are two excellent Sherlock Holmes fics featuring time travel. They both have fun with their fantastical premise while also treating seriously and movingly the human emotions that would arise from it. There are a few writing issues with the first installment and the mystery in the second installment does leave some loose ends, but on the whole, this series is just wonderful. 22,015 words and 18,801 words. Both gen. Both particularly recommended.

After reading Spiderweb, I remembered another MFU fic by Cord Smithee that I had enjoyed: Wicked. This is an episode coda for The Fiddlesticks Affair. It includes some interesting proposed backstory for Illya and some very good interactions between our heroes, as well as ideas about the future of the episode's innocent, Susan. The story has a lot of sex in it, but I found it compelling anyway. 4,465 words. NS/IK slash with het. Particularly recommended.

Tonight I finished the Professionals fic Island Innocents by Glen Fiddich. This was a fun, slow-paced story, with a lot of time devoted to interaction between Bodie and Doyle as they explore the story's picturesque setting. The characterizations of the Lads were well done, as were those of the supporting characters, who were all distinct and vivid. This is an established relationship story, which I liked. The drama of a forming relationship makes a good story element, but I enjoy seeing the Lads' relationship in other phases, too. 54,462 words. B/D slash.

Well, I told [personal profile] byslantedlight that Island Innocents, one of her favorite Pros fics, might be the first story I read for this challenge. I'm still working on that one, but it occurred to me yesterday that Christmas was nearly over, and I hadn't read Cord Smithee's Spiderweb, an MFU story that is my favorite Christmas fic in any fandom. So I read it, followed by it's wonderful companion piece All the Kasha They Could Eat by Jest, and now those are the first fics to be added to my challenge board for the year.

Both of these fics are just so good. Their characterizations are what most stand out, but they are beautifully executed in all other respects as well. The way All the Kasha They could Eat, in particular, uses events from canon is excellent, and Spiderweb even has a non-boring sex scene (*g*). 12,194 and 7,006 words. Both NS/IK slash. Both particularly recommended.

Now that I've finished my final fic bingo card of the year, I am ready to introduce the new game that I will be playing in 2023.

I enjoyed fic bingo. I liked being challenged to read fics I would not have otherwise in order to cover all the letters, and I liked sharing my feelings about what I read. Yet there were a few things that I disliked. The principle one was that fic bingo discouraged me from reading fics, particularly long ones, that started with a letter already filled on my bingo card. Another was that it made me less likely to read short fics, because I wanted to boost the total words for each bingo round. A third, minor one is that I was discouraged from reading fics starting with numerals. (I also found that I spent too much time choosing and tweaking the images to represent each fic on my bingo card, but that is not an inherent flaw in fic bingo, but rather in how I chose to play it.)

My new game, the Million-Word Fanfic Challenge, is designed to correct these issues while preserving the good features of fic bingo. In this game, the object is to read one million words of fanfic across all fandoms while fulfilling minimum word counts for each letter. The minimums only add up to 375,000 words, however, so there is lots of room to read extra fics for any letter.

I hope some others might enjoy playing this game, too. Feel free to share this post with anyone you think might be interested. Happy New Year!

It's time to look back on the year in fic bingo. Fic bingo has been a good thing for me this year, helping motivate me to read fanfic, which I find a healthy activity.

In five rounds of fic bingo, I read 130 fics in 22 fandoms. These included 53 Professionals fics, 25 Man from U.N.C.L.E. fics, 10 Harry Potter fics, and 9 Sherlock Holmes fics, in addition to fics from other fandoms as diverse as The Merchant of Venice and The A-Team. The total word count of all the fics I read for fic bingo was 1,752,223 words.

Based on my memories, my twelve favorites (because I couldn't quite narrow it down to ten) among the fics I read this year were:

I've finished my second round of Prosfic bingo. I read 27 stories (including two for the letter S) that totaled 463,432 words. Today, the five I would most recommend are:

Till a Bullet Stopped His Song by Callisto
The Keeper of Secrets by Jackie Thomas
Calibre by JGL
Reconsiderations by PFL / [personal profile] msmoat
Special Men by [personal profile] sineala

I also admire Decrescendo by [personal profile] erushi, but with some hesitation, as discussed (with spoilers) in this post and its comments. If not for that it would have been among the five top recs.

And now, my final bingo post of the year!

I've been intending for months to read A Mercenary's Tale by Fictionwriter for this round's letter M. The New Year is coming up fast, though, and I haven't been finding a lot of energy for reading, so instead I'm going with Mistletoe and Wine by O. Yardly, one of the fics recommended as part of the Prosfic Rec Advent Calendar. This is a nice fic. It combines a slightly unusual getting-together narrative with a large dose of holiday cuteness. 5,670 words. B/D slash.

I Know I'm Not Forgiven by [profile] jat_sapphire is also a good fic. It has an absorbing plot and good atmosphere to accompany the supernatural elements of the story. I did have some trouble following the characters' emotions, but as I've said before, I think that's a TinTurtle thing and not the fault of any particular story. 10,378 words. B/D slash.

Z is another letter for which I had a different fic picked out than I ended up reading. I was impatient to finish my bingo card, so I opted for a short one: Zigzag by HG. The text of this fic incorporates the titles of all of the stories O. Yardly had published at the time it was written. Trying to spot those was fun and the other elements of the story were enjoyable enough, too. This even turned out to be an unlabeled Christmas fic, so it was appropriate for this week. 1,806 words. B/D slash.

J is for Just Enough Rope, Q is for Querencia

I continue to chomp through the fics I selected.

Under Surveillance by Ellis Ward starts out with Bodie and Doyle surveilling a lesbian colleague. I liked that part; I've always wondered why there aren't more fics in which some of the female CI5 agents are lesbians, as it is clearly implied in Long Shot that some of them are. The rest of the fic I felt neutral about, except for one aspect that confused me. I think there might be some text missing from the story, as there is an event referred back to twice that is never actually described. 5,774 words. B/D slash.

H is for Head Start, X is for X-Ray-Ted

I have four more shortish fics to write about today. There are a few longer stories that I hope to read before the end of this bingo round, but I haven't started on them yet.

I first read The Keeper of Secrets by Jackie Thomas way back in March after [personal profile] macklingirl added it to her bingo card. As was the case with Till a Bullet Stopped His Song, I had already filled the relevant square on my own bingo card, but I liked the fic so much that I saved it to reread during the second round. This is a wonderful fic. I won't say much about it, to avoid spoilers, but it has excellent characterizations and a lot of understated yet vivid emotion. 3,482 words. B/D slash. Particularly recommended.

V is for Vignettes Under Calico Skies

Yesterday evening, I picked out a fic for every letter that I have left on my bingo card. Many of the fics are on the shorter side. I want to be sure to get this round of bingo finished by the end of the year, and I've been chewing through fics more slowly lately than I do sometimes. Among the shorter fics on my list, the ones I read tonight were the three shortest. It was that sort of evening.

An MFU fic bingo card with all the letters filled in.

It took me longer than I expected, but I've finally filled up my Man from U.N.C.L.E. fic bingo card. I read 25 stories totaling 461,516 words. Many of them were excellent, but (at least today) the five I would most recommend are:

The Growing Up Affair by [personal profile] joolz (9,364 words)
Nor Heed the Rumble by [personal profile] utopiantrunks (39,187 words)
To earn your wings by [personal profile] rallamajoop (7,041 words)
Waging World Peace by [personal profile] alex51324 (32,445 words)
Zugzwang by [personal profile] azdak (3,464 words)

Honorable mention to The Incident of the Fellow in the Fellows' Garden by Azdak (28,979 words), which might have had a place on the list if it were not more a Lord Peter Wimsey fic than an MFU fic.
