I needed distracting today, and I spent a major portion of the time reading All the Queen's Men by Victoria Racklyft.

This is a plotty casefic set in the canon universe, but with prominent fantasy elements. I'd read it before, so I knew it was something I liked, and I had a good time reading it. It's exciting and imaginative with good atmosphere. It does make Doyle a little too vulnerable, in my opinion, but not enough that it becomes a major distraction. The fic also has very nice illustrations by Suzan Lovett. 60,057 words. B/D slash with het.

I've finally finished A Birdwatcher's Guide to Cornish Ghosts * by Lizzie. It took a long time.

This story has good writing, and a lot of people like it, but it was just not my thing. That might have been predictable. While I have enjoyed a few, full-conversion AUs like this one—in which Bodie and Doyle have totally different lives, outside any version of CI5—tend to interest me less than other kinds of fics. I also find most sex scenes tedious, and this fic has a truly laughable number of sex scenes. It was easy enough to skim or skip them, but as many as there were, they did seem to me to break up the flow of the plot. At any rate, whether for those reasons or others, I simply never connected with this story. I finished it mostly because, by the time I stopped hoping it would grow on me, I had invested so much time that it seemed a shame to give up. 103,215 words. B/D slash.

I have vid-making on the brain again. Earlier, I was listening to Internet radio and found myself considering each song's potential as a fanvid track. One of the candidates was "All These Things That I've Done" by The Killers. It has some possibilities, I think. It also, however, has the repeated lyric "I got soul, but I'm not a soldier." I once read an article that pointed out that that makes about as much sense as the title of this post, and now I can't hear the line without laughing.

(I am still considering revamping my last vid—indeed, I did some work on it before my move—but I'm not feeling very motivated in that direction at the moment. It got kudos on AO3 yesterday, so somebody likes it as it is. Maybe even several somebodies; it actually has more AO3 kudos than any of my other vids. I don't want to mess it up for the people who enjoy it now.)

K is for the kids who chose themselves, N is for no place like home, F is for the family evans, H is for The Healing Properties of Felt-Tip Pens

Here's another batch of fics for my multifandom bingo card. Three of the five are Harry Potter fics. The wonderful alt.wiz, which I posted about last time, rekindled my interest in Harry Potter fic. I've never been a regular reader, but have had seasons of dabbling, and I seem to be in another one now.

I read The Xavier's School Affair by C. Wehst. Or rather, I read as much of it as was ever posted. The story is unfinished, which is very sad, because I really enjoyed what there was.

This fic is, of course, a crossover with X-Men. I'm not familiar enough with the X-Men universe to say anything about its faithfulness to that canon. From an UNCLE fan's perspective, though, the story is very well done. The characterizations of the MFU characters are excellent, the crossover characters are interesting and engaging, and the plot is well paced. I wish there were more of it. (There is a tad more information on the crossover universe in the short fic Weapon K, also by C. Wehst, but nothing to resolve any of this fic's loose ends.) 11,064 words. Gen.

Tonight I read To earn your wings by [personal profile] rallamajoop, which [personal profile] timemidae recommended over on the section7mfu comm. It's a satisfying fic providing some background for Heather McNabb, as well as a glimpse into the lives of 1960s airline stewardesses. The author's post about her research for the fic (which is linked in the end notes) is also interesting. 7,041 words. Gen.

Last night I read The Palest Ink by JGL. It's a suspenseful and intriguing story, and I stayed up much too late to finish it. It's told entirely from Bodie's point of view. I think a retelling from the point of view of the other principle character would make a fascinating sequel. 29,531 words. B/D slash.

I'm still trying to make it through A Birdwatcher's Guide to Cornish Ghosts. I've been hoping it will grow on me, but 60,000 words in, I think I can say that it is just not my thing. On the other hand, having read this far, it would be a shame not to finish. Besides, I've already picked out a pretty bird photo for my bingo card. Sigh.

I took a break from the very long Pros fic I've been gnawing on to read Spring-Heeled Jack by Georgina Kirrin, which [livejournal.com profile] byslantedlight mentioned when I asked for some casefic recs. It can be found on the Proslib CD.

This fic relates the effect of a particular case on the Lads' relationship. I think the fic would have been enriched by a bit more detail about the case in question, but as written, it has some unusual plot features and a couple of very good scenes to recommend it. 21,813 words. B/D slash.

Happy International Fanworks Day!

As I did last year, I'm celebrating by sharing some recs coveraing several types of fanwork from a variety of fandoms.

Fan Fiction

alt.wiz: Charlie Furth, Usenet, and the Magical Internet Revolution by [livejournal.com profile] flibbertygigget
Harry Potter, gen, 8932 words
I first read this fic last week and have been looking for opportunities to recommend it since then. It's a piece of fictional nonfiction detailing events that might have taken place in the wizarding world of the 1990s. I think it's wonderful.

I confess that I've been reading an old favorite again instead of exploring new stories. While asking for some recs of long fics, I remembered how much I like Safe Harbor by Kellie Matthews, and I couldn't resist revisiting it.

This fic has a lot going for it: serious moments, funny moments, plot, romance, good dialog, and solid characterization. I find it very satisfying. It does have more sex than seems necessary to the narrative, which is not my preference, but the rest of the story is worth waiting out some boring bits. 48,030 words. NS/IK slash.

Last night I read Decisions by Carol, which [livejournal.com profile] macklingirl had posted about that day. It's in the library of the Prosfanfic group, and you must be a member to access it. (Those who are can find it in this folder.)

This fic is made up of Doyle's diary entries during the first months of his employment with CI5. It's a little hard for me to imagine Doyle keeping a diary, but I did enjoy the unusual structure, and the fic is well written. 4,296 words. Gen.

Well, I've been devoting most of my reading energy over the past few days to a long Professionals fic, but I took time out to read a very short MFU story: Just a Number by [livejournal.com profile] jantojones. This fic has Napoleon, at 35, comparing himself to a crop of younger agents. I enjoyed it. I am also 35, and I've been struck more and more recently by the fact that there are fully adult people significantly younger than I am. 404 words. Gen.

If my fic bingo posts are annoying you, and you would like to stop them from showing up in your feed, you can do that in the following way:

• Using a web browser, go to my profile.
• In the menu bar at the top, click either "Modify Friend" or "You are Subscribed", as applicable.
(These may appear as icons rather than words, depending on the size of your browser window.)
• A new page will load. On that page, under "Tags", click on "Modify Entries Feed".
• Tick the "Exclude Selected Tags" option.
• Click the "bingo" tag.
• Click "Save Changes" at the bottom of the page.

If you want to exclude my MFU-related or my Pros-related posts from your feed, you can do that using a similar process.

I am really enjoying the fic bingo games that I am playing in both of my main fandoms. But why play only two kinds of bingo when you can play three? I've decided to start a multifandom bingo card for the miscellaneous fics that I read outside my primary fandoms. Don't worry, though. To minimize spam in my friends' feeds, I will only be posting the multifandom card whenever I have five new fics to add.

The multifandom fic bingo board.

Anyone else who wants to play multifandom bingo is welcome to use this board. It is based on the Prosfic bingo board created by [livejournal.com profile] keli.

Today's entry on my bingo card is The Mind's Construction by Azdak. I enjoyed this fic, but not as much as most of the other works by Azdak that I've read. It has a lively plot and an unusual POV, but doesn't do as much with its themes as the author seems to be aiming for. 16,801 words. Gen.

This evening I finished Lost & Found by Kellie Matthews. It's a meandering fic recounting Illya and Napoleon's first meetings and the early days of their collaboration, including events surrounding some of the missions from the show's first season. The fic is a bit slow in places and perhaps a little short on conflict, but the characterizations and dialog are good, and I enjoyed it enough to keep reading till the end. 44,544 words. NS/IK slash.
