Today I read Distraction by [livejournal.com profile] jantojones. It is a pleasant short fic showing our heroes at work. I'm glad JantoJones has had some new inspiration after so many months. 1,101 words. Gen.

I was poking around my Proslib folder, when I spotted Koala Magic by Nansi. And I thought, "I haven't filled in 'K' yet. Why not?"

This fic is about as silly as its title makes it sound. It's all right, especially its second half, but I'm unlikely to read it again. 4,637 words. Gen.

I is for Into the Arms of Morpheus, O is for Once a King or Queen in Narnia

I've been sick again, but still able to read, so I have four fics to add to my card.

Anyone remember how I said that I wanted most of my board to be filled by fics I had not read before? I'm not doing very well so far. Tonight I finished rereading one of my favorite pieces of fan fiction, Waging World Peace by [livejournal.com profile] alex51324.

I love this fic so much that, a couple of years ago, I read it aloud to my mother as an example of what good fanfic can be like. It's an episodic story with a lot of excellent historical detail and good characterization of both our heroes. (Illya is not quite as I see him portrayed in canon, but only in one particular.) 32,445 words. NS/IK slash.

Crossing the Jordan is the sequel to The Eve of Destruction, which I posted about yesterday, and is also by [livejournal.com profile] istia. It is a lovely fic with some good interactions between the Lads, encompassing both concord and conflict. Despite the title, this is not a death fic. B/D slash. 6,409 words.

[livejournal.com profile] dawnebeth's most recent bingo post reminded me how much I like Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying by [livejournal.com profile] istia. Between that and [livejournal.com profile] shooting2kill's accompanying comment that istia is a fine writer who could use more attention, I decided to sample a couple more of istia's fics. I chose Night Visit and The Eve of Destruction.

Night Visit is an unusual fic. I wished there were more of it, but I enjoyed it as far as it went, and as written it did have the feeling of a small bubble of time set apart from the rest, which fit its story. B/D slash. 4,343 words.

The Eve of Destruction is a fic told from Cowley's point of view, which endears it to me as a Cowley fan. I thought it was a very believable glimpse into Cowley's thoughts as he faces the stresses of his position. B/D slash. 3,751 words.

I don't think it is going to take me all year to fill up my bingo card. Not unless I make a rule only to count novel-length fics, anyway. Fanfic is all I read most of the time. That is not ideal, of course, but I have my own strange, chelonian reasons. Maybe when I finish this card I will just start another one.

I read Botticelli by Elizabeth Bear after seeing [livejournal.com profile] dancingpony use it for an entry on their bingo board.

This fic has an interesting structure and some satisfying moments, though there were also a couple of errors that niggled at me. The thread of the Botticelli game was enjoyable. I used to play Botticelli a lot, though by somewhat different rules than are used in this story. 3,874 words. NS/IK slash.

Today I read X Marks the Spot by O Yardley, a shortish story that is part casefic and part slightly weird Christmas fluff. It's an established-relationship story, which was a nice change of pace, but it didn't make any very deep impression on me. It's just fine, you might say. 4,556 words. B/D slash.

I want most of my MFU fic bingo squares to be filled by fics I have not read before, but there is only one Man from U.N.C.L.E. story that can represent Z for me: Zugzwang by Azdak, which I reread tonight.

I first encountered Zugzwang in the early days of my interest in MFU, and it has stuck with me like a burr in the years since. Short as it is, it is a great fic. 3,464 words. Gen.

I was sick today, so I did a lot of reading, and finished Tea for Two by Alexandra, which [livejournal.com profile] byslantedlight recommended in my thread about Professionals casefic.

In Tea for Two, Bodie and Doyle search for missing weapons on the grounds of a large country house while their shifting relationship does its best to distract them from the case. I enjoyed this fic's cast of eccentric supporting characters. The story was a little slow in places, but kept me interested enough to want to finish it. This is a Christmas fic. 70,187 words. B/D slash.

Tonight I finished rereading Masquerade by Tarot / Chris_Quinton / [livejournal.com profile] chrisquinton, so it is the first entry on my Prosfic Bingo card.

In Masquerade, Bodie and Doyle go undercover as a pair of gay musicians in order to bust a gang that uses blackmail to steal industrial secrets. It is a beautifully plotted casefic that introduces new developments at all the right moments, and I recommend it highly. 46,299 words. B/D slash.

This card from the Pros FandomCard exchange arrived on Monday night, but I've been caught up in a flurry of medical appointments, so this is the first chance I've had to post photos. It comes all the way from Ladsland, with a fetching Christmas stamp, and and Armistice Day postmark, a sign of our times of slow mail service.

Last night my mother and I watched a few episodes of the sitcom Taxi, since I had never seen it before. I watched a couple more today and also looked up the show to find out more about it. I was intrigued to find that its original run, 1978 to 1983, coincided closely with that of The Professionals. And, of course, I immediately began trying to imagine what shape a crossover between the two might take. I've yet to come up with anything that I think would actually work.

I will probably be starting a new Professionals fanvid soon using the song Hammer to Fall by Queen. (Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] restorick for the suggestion.) Today, though, I've been considering whether I should make a fluffy, romantic vid first (or maybe at the same time), since so many people seem to like the one I made using the Turtles's You Baby. Yet I find that, in addition to the barriers to song choice I mentioned in my previous post, vids like that present the further problem that potential songs are often inconveniently gendered. If the singer mentions the beloved in the third person, it may be as "she", if the singer addresses the beloved, it may be as "girl", and so on. Take the song I'm a Believer by The Monkees, which I love. (Yes, I'm a goop, but in my defense, the lyrics are clever and it's got a rock organ.) There are parts that might lend themselves to a Doyle POV vid, but to use the song that way would require associating Bodie with feminine pronouns. I don't know whether that should disqualify it or not, really. My inclination is that it should, however. I'm pretty sure it would have for the Lads and their contemporaries; overlooking it would feel like too much of an anachronism.

I've added to the Beloved Collection the Professionals fic Love Lies Bleeding by Shoshanna (4423 words), which was posted on AO3 last week (though I believe it was first published some years ago). It is a serious fic that concerns itself with two of the questions that always interest me in the fandoms I dabble in: what Hero A would and would not be willing to do to protect Hero B, and whether or not the reverse question has the same answers. I think about those two things a lot, and I am attracted by fics that address them.

These are my illustrations for Traitors in Our Midst, [livejournal.com profile] dawnebeth's 2021 story for CI5 Box of Tricks. Visit the master post to find out where you can read the story.

I've enclosed each illustration in a set of spoiler tags so that readers who are so inclined can wait to look at it until they have reached the corresponding point in the story. And now, on to the illustrations!

On Friday night, I stayed up late picking out favorite Professionals fics and vids to bring up during the BistoCon rec panel. I hoped that some preparation would keep my circuits from overloading when it was my turn. It sort of worked.

I prepared quite a few more recs than I needed; I wanted flexibility even if other people mentioned some of the works before I had the opportunity. In the end, my recs filled up the whole page of a spiral-bound notebook. I shared only three of them at BistoCon, though, and I'm not sure anyone could actually understand me when I did. Thus, not being one to let good recs go to waste, I've decided to post them all here.

(Lately I've felt shy about saying that I like anything, but hopefully this will be a good exercise to overcome that.)

So, almost eight months after my last vid, I've finally posted another. I'm currently in the phase where I think it is terrible and can't stand to look at it, which happens after I post anything. Yet I really enjoy making vids, so I'd like to begin another sooner than months from now. The obstacle, as always, is that I have a lot of trouble finding songs.

I am so close to completing my new Pros vid, but I can't find the right clip for the ending. I've been looking for weeks. Ack!

I had a dream that I was writing a Big Bang story in which Bodie, Doyle, and the rest of CI5 lived in an isolated military installation amid lots of trees and snow. There was some kind of supernatural threat in the surrounding wilderness that they had to guard against. Then Bodie got married and his wife had an adorable baby that was irresistible to women, only Bodie and Doyle were also both androids. So expect that next year, maybe. *g*
