It's 2015, and same-sex marriage has become legal throughout the United States. Adele is on the radio again. Here in the USA, the year's top film is Star Wars: The Force Awakens. New terms coined include: aquafaba, edgelord, ghost kitchen, red flag law, and sponcon.

For this year, I read seven works: three crossovers between The Professionals and the film Lust, Caution; one plain Professionals fic; one Man from U.N.C.L.E. movie fic; and two Sherlock Holmes fics.

I had a root canal today. Woo!

It's 2014. Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars are on the radio. Here in the USA, the year's top film is American Sniper. New terms coined include: aro, Black Lives Matter, hard pass, land acknowledgement, manspreading, on fleek, and Zoom.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. had its 50th anniversary in 2014, and celebrations included the MFU Mini Bang, from which I drew several of the fics I read for the year. I read five fics in all: four Man from U.N.C.L.E. and one Professionals.

It's been a long time since I posted. My bingo reading slowed down a lot in October. Part of that was a planned break to allow me to read the entries in the Professionals Big Bang, which were released over the course of the month. Part of it was turbulence in my mental and physical health. (What else is new?)

It's 2013. Miley Cyrus is on the radio. Here in the USA, the year's top film is The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. New terms coined include: adulting, bingeable, and virtue signalling.

For this year, I read five works, almost all crossovers. I read one Professionals x Racing Game crossover, one Professionals x Inspector George Gently crossover, one Psmith x Chronicles of Narnia crossover, one Battlestar Galactica x A-Team crossover, and one plain (though AU) Sentinel fic. (There are no Man from U.N.C.L.E. fics in this batch. Expect several next time, however.)

It's 2012, and people are talking a variety of nonsense about the Mayan calendar. Psy is on the radio. Here in the USA, the year's top film is The Avengers. New terms coined include: escape room, generative AI, hot take, JOMO, and reaction GIF.

For 2012, I read five works: three Professionals fics, one Battlestar Galactica x A-Team crossover, and one Man from U.N.C.L.E. x Doctor Who crossover.

It's 2011. Adele is on the radio. Here in the USA, the year's top film is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2, the final film of that franchise. New terms coined include: ASMR, blockchain, gender-affirming surgery, nanoplastic, and wokeness. (More recent years have shorter lists of coinages because most of the terms invented recently have not yet made it into the dictionary.)

For the year 2011, I read five fics: three Professionals, one Man from U.N.C.L.E., and one Sherlock Holmes. I also read significant portions of two other, long fics that I ultimately decided not to finish.

The virtual Bistocon took place this weekend. At previous Bistocons, the rec panels have often been dominated by older zine-era fics, classics of Pros fandom. This year, for a change, the con com asked people to recommend fics published in 2010 and later. I don't feel that newer fics have been underrepresented among my recs, particularly. Yet, having made the effort to identify all the Pros fics in my Beloved Collection that were published in 2010 or later, then winnow those down to relatively few titles, it was inevitable that I'd make a post about it.

I shared some of these during the rec panel, but not most of them. I sorted them into a few different categories for easy reference, as seen below.

Again, it's been a while since I posted. I'm definitely not going to finish this game by the end of the year. (Oh well.) I do hope to pick up the pace a bit, though. Reading fanfic is a healthy activity for me, and I haven't been doing enough of it lately.

And again, I'm not feeling at all excited about writing up the fics I read for this year. I've been putting it off for several days, hoping I'd get in the mood, but that hasn't happened. Hence I've decided just to do very abbreviated reviews. Sorry if they are less interesting.

It's 2010. Katy Perry is on the radio. Here in the USA, the year's top film is Toy Story 3. New terms coined include: 5G, Arab Spring, bump stock, deadname, and misogynoir.

For 2010 I read five works: one Professionals fic, one Professionals x 28 Days Later crossover, one Professionals x FlashForward crossover, one Sherlock Holmes x Neverwhere crossover, and one Man from U.N.C.L.E. fic.

I'm not feeling much enthusiasm for writing up fics today. It's been at least a month since I read the first one for this round, though, and I neglected to take any notes this time. I feel I should get something down while I still remember my reactions. The results may be sketchier than usual.

It's 2009, not a good year for me. Lady Gaga is on the radio. Here in the USA, the year's top film is Avatar. New terms coined include: alt-right, body-shame, cryptocurrency, dox, gig economy, jegging, and makerspace.

For the year 2009, I read five fics: one Man from U.N.C.L.E. fic, one Harry Potter x Sherlock Holmes crossover, and three Professionals fics.

I'm feeling quite a bit better today, but I think I will still benefit from making another rec post. Besides, yesterday's post didn't cover some of my favorite parts of my Beloved Collection.

My mental health has been bad this week...which means it's time for another rec post. Playing with my Beloved Collection of favorite fics always makes me feel better.

These recs will have no particular structure or theme. I'm just going to root around and see what strikes a chord in me this evening. I'm not going to try to avoid overlap with past posts, either, because at this point I can't remember which fics I've already brought up. I'm turning over a new leaf.

Tacky

I sometimes visit the r/FanFiction subreddit. Today I brought up my practice of reviewing fanfic there, and another user said that, in their opinion, writing unsolicited negative reviews is "tacky" because fic writers are not professional authors.

What do you all think of this? I suppose that people who follow the journal of a person who writes such reviews might be a biased sample, but I'm still curious.

Personally, I see it as one of the things engaged fans do. I know there is plenty of precedent for it in fandom, and the reviews of the past, as quoted on Fanlore, are often much less gentle than I try to be.

Today I have two years' worth of write-ups to share. I've been reading quite a bit lately, but between one thing and another, I haven't been able to post. Fortunately, I recently had the bright idea to write notes about each fic as I finish it, rather than trying to write them all up from memory later. (Don't ask me why I didn't think of this until now, because I don't know.)

It's 2007. Rihanna is on the radio. Here in the USA, the year's top film is Spider-Man 3. New terms coined include: Bechdel test, colony collapse disorder, coworking, crowdfunding, hashtag, Latinx, listicle, mic drop, tweetstorm, and yeet.

For 2007, I read five fics: three Professionals, one Sherlock Holmes, and one Man from U.N.C.L.E..

For 2006, I read five fics: three Professionals fics, one Sentinel fic, and one Sentinel x La Femme Nikita crossover. (Apologies to the Man from U.N.C.L.E. fans among my readers. There are no MFU fics this time.)

During the second 10 rounds of my Lifetime Fic Bingo game, 1996 to 2005, I read 56 fics. Of those, the five that I would most recommend today are:

Remember Me by Gil Hale (The Professionals; gen; 25,630 words)
To Live in Interesting Times by Taliesin (The Man from U.N.C.L.E.; slash; 19,657 words)
The Uncertainty Principle by C. W. Walker ([personal profile] st_crispins) (The Man from U.N.C.L.E.; gen; 20,145 words)
Verity by [personal profile] kerravonsen (The Sentinel x The Matrix; gen; 35,486 words)

(Above: Green Day performs music for the decade 1996-2005.)

It's me again. My output of write-ups has fallen off a lot lately, but for happy reasons. Over the past two months I've been putting most of my energy into reviewing math. I have a bachelor's degree in math, but have been unable to engage with the subject for about fifteen years due to mental and physical illness. Lately, circumstances have finally aligned so that I'm able to work on recovering some of my missing knowledge. It is a very important development for me.

Now, on with the show...

It's 2001, and I'm starting high school as the Twin Towers are destroyed. Linkin Park is on the radio. Here in the USA, the year's top film is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. New terms coined include: ack, anti-vaxxer, bromance, captcha, chiweenie, dubstep, forever chemical, Internet of Things, lean in, and twerking.

For 2001, I read five fics: two Man from U.N.C.L.E., two Professionals, and one Sherlock Holmes x Quantum Leap crossover.

It's the year 2000, and pedants are making sure everyone knows that the new millennium will not start until next year. *NSYNC is on the radio. Here in the USA, the year's top film is How the Grinch Stole Christmas. New terms coined include: abandonware, climate change denial, downvote, faux-hawk, geochaching, google, grain bowl, speed dating, sudoku, and TiVo.

It's been a long time since my last Lifetime Fic Bingo post, both because I've been busy with other things and because I read more than usual this time. For the year 2000, I read two Professionals fics, one Sentinel fic, one Sentinel crossover with the works of H. P. Lovecraft, and one Man from U.N.C.L.E. fic. I also read three fics from 1999 as background for their sequels published in 2000, for a total of eight fics altogether. Let's hope I can remember them all well enough to write them up.
