I had a dream that I received my art assignment for the Professionals Big Bang, but that the person whose story I was assigned didn't want me making the art to go with it. They got very angry and chased me around an underground maze (as one does). I think we came to some kind of understanding eventually, though.

Tonight I've been playing with my Beloved Collection (which is the name I've given to my archive of all-time favorite fanfics). I counted the number of fics I've collected in each of my two main fandoms, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and The Professionals. I also made lists of the authors of the fics, with tallies of how many fics in my collection each author had written. Below are some of the results.

Things Not to Do in the Middle of the Night #241: reread Bodie Lost and Bodie Found
tinturtle: (Default)

I think I had a dream about Bodie and Doyle climbing trees. There's not a scene in canon where they do that, is there?

I'm making progress on a new Pros vid after roughly six months of alternating false starts and apathy. I have a point of view and a brainstorming grid, and I've begun filling in clips. Now the only question is: Will people still love me if I use a country song?

When writing reviews of fan fiction, one of my highest praises is to say that a story is "workmanlike." By that, I suppose I mean well constructed in all its aspects—the kind of work where everything is done right, then done right again. It might be that I should come up with another word to describe this quality. I'm not sure people who read my comments (including fic authors) realize that "workmanlike" is one of my highest terms of praise. Not to mention the fact that the vast majority of fanfic is written...by women.

In the fall of 2020, I read a prodigious amount of Professionals fanfic and posted a series of reports featuring short comments on what I read. You can find those posts indexed here, along with lists of the fics mentioned in each. (Links to the fics are available in the posts themselves.) Note that these are not necessarily recs; I some of what I read I did not like.

Something I've found to be important in vid making is to have a point of view in mind. Who is "I"? Who is "you"? Who is "we"? I try to let my vids speak for themselves, so I haven't labelled them on AO3 or YouTube as having particular points of view (as I have my few fics). Nevertheless, almost all of them do, at least per section. In my first vid, "Behind Blue Eyes", Cowley, Bodie, and Doyle each got a verse.* My slash vid, "You Baby", uses Bodie's point of view. "We are the Champions" is Cowley POV, with the verses' "I" referring to himself and the refrain's "we" referring to his organization as he sees it. "Who'll Stop the Rain" is very clearly a Doyle POV vid, and "Just a Little Light" is split between Bodie and Doyle, with each getting half (and with “you” referring to the other partner throughout). The only exception to the rule is "Life During Wartime". While the song uses the first and second person, the vid has a third-party POV that looks on at the Lads' world (or so it seems to me). I think it still works; the difference makes it the least emotional of my vids, though.** At any rate, I have had several vid ideas incubating for some time, but showing no signs of pipping. And I think I might have moved one of them closer to maturity tonight by deciding firmly on a point of view.

See this journal entry for an index of the LiveJournal posts associated with my vids.

*(Although I think one of the weaknesses of that vid is that it's a bit hard to follow the structure. I may produce a second edition at some point.)

**(ETA: I suppose the song choice probably affects this, as well. The song “Life During Wartime” is a bit tongue-in-cheek; it's not as sincere as the others.)

Today is Eastern Orthodox Easter.

As far as I recall, I've only read one fic, After Querido by L. White, in which Illya is a Russian Orthodox believer. That's unsurprising. I don't find the idea very plausible, and I expect most other cousins don't, either. I love the fic, though. It's part of my collection of favorites.

Another enjoyable fic, even more suited to today's holiday, is How to Track an Arctic Hare by AconitumNapellus / [livejournal.com profile] aconitumn, which she wrote as an LJ Easter egg last year.

I've never posted a meme before. I got this one from [livejournal.com profile] gilda_elise, whose post was linked in the Pros Newsletter.

1) How many stories have you posted?
Three.
(Also 6 vids and a bunch of photo manipulations.)

In response to a topic [livejournal.com profile] glennagirl started in [livejournal.com profile] section7mfu, I recently spent a long time writing up a list of some of my favorite MFU hurt/comfort and injury fics. I never posted it, however, because I decided that most of them were darker than glennagirl was looking for. Not being one to let good recs go to waste, I've decided to post the list here. I'm not sure who will benefit from it, since most of my handful of LiveJournal friends are not MFU fans, and many of those that are don't like fics like this. I hope someone will find it useful at some point, though.

Today I received a very surprising Christmas surprise from [livejournal.com profile] macklingirl, who mailed it from Germany a full three months ago, on 3 December of 2020. Much like one of the Wise Men, it has arrived from the east bearing a gift, just not in time for the birth.

I had an UNCLE dream! I spent a good part of last evening writing a message about MFU fanfic, so I guess I had it on the brain. In my dream, Illya and Napoleon were, for some reason that did not survive waking, supervising school standardized testing in Texas. *g*

Happy International Fanworks Day, everyone!

I thought I might rec a few fanworks for the occasion. I've aimed for a diversity of fandoms and content so that there will be something for everyone.

Fan Fiction

The Optimists in Foxholes Affair by otherhawk
The Man from U.N.C.L.E., gen, 22630 words
This is a plotty mission fic with a side of hurt/comfort and just the right amount of emotional restraint. Like all of otherhawk's work, it is well written, especially the distinct voices of the two main characters. Reading it feels a lot like watching an MFU episode, only with a bit more real drama than often characterized the show.

I spent part of the evening fretting about the loss of fanworks, and then, more productively, trying to make sure that The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Fan Fiction Archive, The Chrome and Gunmetal Madhouse (MFU), The Professionals Circuit Archive, and The Hatstand (Pros) are all backed up to the Wayback Machine. Someone had clearly done a thorough pass over The Circuit Archive, but MFU Archive, Chrome and Gunmetal, and The Hatstand contained quite a bit of material that had not been collected yet, so it was a worthwhile effort. I'm certainly glad that MFU's File 40 had a nearly complete back-up when it went down.

I have a compilation of mid-century Christmas radio hits. Among these, which is the song that makes me cry every time I hear it?

Is it the Roy Orbison tear-jerker "Pretty Paper"?
Is it the wistful "I'll Be Home for Christmas"?
Is it "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas", which is so apt this year?

No. It is the novelty song "Snoopy's Christmas", the hero of which is a cartoon beagle.

Bodie and Doyle prepare to swing from ropes.

I had a Pros-y dream! Perhaps keeping my Pros seasonal cards by my bed is working after all (or maybe it's all the hours working on my recent vid). I can't actually remember much about it, but Bodie and Doyle were definitely in it, and they swung from ropes like in Servant of Two Masters. Much better than the creepy homicidal doll.
