Things I Like: The Long Game

I recently read The Long Game by [personal profile] garonne, a Professionals fic from the 2015 Big Bang. As this fic begins, Doyle appears to have betrayed CI5, and the story continues from there. It was great: suspenseful to the point that I found hard to put it down and full of strong emotion without being overdone. It's also told mostly from Jax's point of view, which is novel and carried off well. 20,389 words. Bodie/Doyle slash.

Introducing Lifetime Fic Bingo

Inspired by [personal profile] byslantedlight's Pros-by-Year Bingo game and by [personal profile] timemidae's response to my last post, I've devised a new reading game for the second half of this year: Lifetime Fic Bingo. For this game, I will read at least one fic published in each year of my life, as shown below.

The Lifetime Fic Bingo card.

This is going to be a bit of a research project, since most of the sources of fanfic I draw from either give no dates for included works or give unreliable ones. (AO3 has a mixture of backdated original publication dates and upload dates attached to the older works hosted there, for instance.) Yet I think that, with help from Fanlore, I should be able to find at least one interesting fic for each year.

[ETA: After a bit more delving into what is available, I've decided that I will aim for at least three fics in at least two fandoms, each at least 1000 words long.]

I'm going to start by reading the fics in order, as Timemidae suggested. If I find that too regimented, though, I may switch to skipping around. I'm also going to try for diversity in what I read, but my choices may lean toward Professionals fic, since that fandom offers the most dating information.

Anyone may join me in playing this game, though it will only work for somewhat younger fans, and of course, my card will only work for others born in the same year.

Anyone may join me in playing this game, though it will only work in this form for somewhat younger fans, and of course, my card will only work for others born in the same year. Older fans could play by picking another milestone in their life to start from, instead of their birth: learning to read, becoming an adult (who can read sexy fanfic), etc.

What now?

million word part 1 filled.png million word part 2 filled.png

Having finished my Million-Word Fanfic Challenge, I need to decide what reading game to play for the rest of the year. Any suggestions?

Absent another idea, I'm thinking about another round of the Million-Word Challenge, but using the initial letter of the author's name to allocate points rather than the first letter of the title. What do you all think?

Million-Word Challege: Part 2 Highlights

During part two of the Million-Word Fanfic Challenge, I read 49 fics. Among those, the five fics that I would most recommend today are:

Witness and Testimony by [personal profile] violsva (Sherlock Holmes; slash)
No Lothario by Francesca (The Sentinel; slash)
Ours But to Do by [personal profile] bardicvoice (The Professionals; gen)
These Layers of Charnel Air by Slantedlight ([personal profile] byslantedlight) (The Professionals; slash)
...And Its Business Is Joy by Elise_Madrid ([personal profile] gilda_elise) (Star Trek TOS x The Professionals; slash)

All recommended fics:

Million-Word Challenge: A is for ...And Its Busines Is Joy, P is for Paper Chase

Million-Word Fanfic Challenge board so far.
The key for the challenge board.

I've completed my Million Word Fanfic Challenge. Woohoo! In this last leg, I read six fics, but I will only be writing up two.

...And Its Business Is Joy by Elise_Madrid ([personal profile] gilda_elise) is a crossover between Star Trek TOS and The Professionals. I liked this fic a lot. It had both emotion and humor and the interactions between the two sets of characters were interesting. 24,654 words. Kirk/Spock slash and Bodie/Doyle slash. Particularly recommended.
Comments with spoilers:
I really wanted Bodie and Doyle to figure out that the Enterprise was from Earth's future, though. Allowing them to see that same-sex relationships eventually become accepted by society would have been an interesting development after the conflict early in the story over their efforts to conceal their own relationship.

Also, I'm not very familiar with Star Trek TOS, but I think this fic may be AU relative to that canon, since Spock decides not to return to Vulcan as he is shown to have done in the beginning of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Author, if you are reading this, was that the intention?

Paper Chase by ML Mead ([personal profile] moonlightmead), a Professionals fic, was very good, as well. It's a casefic with a lively plot and some quite suspenseful scenes. There was one point I'm not sure about, as discussed below, but it's a matter of interpretation. 25,129 words. Bodie/Doyle slash. Particularly recommended.
Comments with spoilers:
The plot stopped short of them actually doing so, but ML Mead made it clear that Bodie and Doyle were prepared to murder the Russian agent Leon in order to keep their relationship secret. (Killing someone who is no physical threat and has offered to surrender to your side is murder. To say nothing of doing it in order to preserve your job.) I'm willing to roll with a wide range of character interpretations, but I find this one difficult. It seems out of character for Doyle, particularly, as someone disturbed by unnecessary killing and willing to take risks to avoid it (as in The Madness of Mickey Hamilton). In light of the fact that he owed Leon his life, I'm not sure I believe it of Bodie, either, though it would be easier to convince me. I need to do more thinking on the matter, but I'm eager to get this write-up posted, so that's all I have to say for now.

The four fics I'm not writing up were worth three points for I, six points for E, another three points for I, and eight points for R.

66 Recs (to Get Your Kecks)

beloved.png

I'm feeling listless tonight and having trouble focusing enough to read any fic. Rec posts always make me feel better, so I've decided to make a list of some of the fics I'd like to be reading if I had the concentration. I'm going to choose a sample from each folder of my Beloved Collection, including one fic per ten fics in the folder. This is just an exercise to cheer me up, but maybe some others will find it interesting as well.

Today I have one longish and three short fics to write about.

The first of the short fics is You came back... by anotherdiana, a fic based on The Phantom of the Opera (the Lloyd Webber musical). Last week, I watched the recording of the show's 25th anniversary production at the Royal Albert Hall. As I often do after encountering a piece of original fiction, I then headed online to see what the fanfic was like.

Hello again, esteemed readers. It's hard to believe it's been nearly six weeks since my last challenge post. I was in a strange state of mind for most of April and didn't read any fanfic for nearly a month. I've been back at it over the past few days, though, which I'm glad of. As I've said before, it is a healthy activity for me.

(Some of the fics I have to write up today, I read before my recent break, and my memories of them are not as sharp as I'd like. Still, I'll do my best to report on them accurately, if perhaps briefly.)

Popular vs. Favorite

[personal profile] mab_browne recently made a post on Tumblr responding to the following prompt:

List your “top 10” (or up to 10 if you haven’t written that many) fics ranked by kudos on AO3. Are you surprised by what’s most popular to your readers? Then, under a cut, provide your ranking of your personal top 10 fics (with explanations if you want!), and then tag a few fellow writers!

I've decided to do something similar, but with my Professionals vids. Hence I'm only going to list the top five in each ranking, since I only have eight vids, and I'm going to do the first ranking according to the sum of the AO3 kudos and the YouTube likes. Here we go.

Most Popular:
Cover Me: 28K + 27L = 55
You Baby: 9K + 33L = 42
Life During Wartime: 8K + 15L = 23
Behind Blue Eyes: 11K + 10L = 21
Keep Me From Blowing Away: 14K + 5L = 19

The first two items on this list are not surprising. Cover Me is probably the closest to perfect of my vids and also uses better footage than the others. And I knew that You Baby was a viewer favorite. I'm surprised that Life During Wartime ranked so high. I've always been fond of it, but I had the impression that it wasn't very popular. Behind Blue Eyes was my first vid, and while I do like it, it has issues. I attribute its place in the top five to a combination of people wanting to encourage me as a new vidder and its having been up the longest. The fact that this is apparently the perfect song for Pros may also play a role. Among Pros vids available online, Behind Blue Eyes is used more than any other song, with four examples besides mine.

These Are a Few

My mental health is a bit of a mess at the moment, so I need something cheering to do tonight. I've decided to share some recs based on the favorite story elements that I posted in my recent thread on that topic at [community profile] ci5hq.

I asked about people's favorite and least favorite themes/tropes/story elements in Professionals fic. This was my own response:

I like hurt/comfort, believed-dead plots, amnesia, melodrama generally, undercover as gay, arcs about overcoming internalized homophobia, fics with backstory, dæmon fic, and sci-fi AUs, especially if the characters retain analogous jobs and backgrounds.

I don't like rape fics, years-long separations, permanent disability, fics with open endings, or AUs that give the Lads totally different lives or histories. That said, I think I have examples of all of those things except the last in my collection of favorite Pros fics.

In this post, I'm going to name my favorite examples (as far as I can remember) of each of these elements, including the elements I don't usually like. I'm going to cover both of my major fandoms: The Professionals and The Man from U.N.C.L.E..

(Recs like this inevitably include minor spoilers. I've enclosed the more spoilery of them in spoiler tags, however.)

Million-Word Challenge: P is for Portman Square

Million-Word Fanfic Challenge board so far.
The key for the challenge board.

Well, I seem to have finished the first half of my million-word challenge, and it's only the middle of February. Maybe I will be able to read two million words this year. We'll see.

Over the past couple of days, I've read three fics that I'm not going to write up, all starting with X and worth 1, 1, and 3 points. (As before, if you are overpoweringly curious about why I'm keeping mum about these, send me a private message.)

I also read Portman Square by [personal profile] afterism, which is genderswap fic based on the Raffles series. I found that making Raffles and Bunny women made the story's premise work even better. It is easier to understand their resorting to burglary in light of how few other options their society allowed them. The femslash was effective, too. (I always feel guilty that I don't read more femslash. It makes me feel like a bad lesbian.) 5,933 words. Lady!Raffles/Lady!Bunny femslash. Particularly recommended.
